## How to calculate engagement rate on X

1. ### 1Open the post's analytics: On X, open the post and view its analytics.
2. ### 2Enter what people did: Type each count into its field, or use X's engagements total.
3. ### 3Add what to divide by: Enter impressions, and followers if you want both rates.
4. ### 4Find your baseline: Switch to Account baseline and paste a list of posts to get your median.

## Which engagement rate formula to use

Four common versions answer four different questions. Mixing them is why two reports on the same account disagree.

- ### Rate by impressions: Of the people who saw it, how many acted? engagements impressions: Judging a post, testing times and formats: Posts with tiny reach, where one like swings it
- ### Rate by followers: How much activity for this audience size? engagements followers: Comparing accounts when impressions are missing: Posts that travel far beyond your followers
- ### Pooled rate: Over a month, how often did a view become an action? all engagements all impressions: Monthly reporting: Typical posts, because one hit dominates
- ### Median post rate: What does a normal post achieve? middle value of each post's rate: Your baseline for judging new posts: Samples under 15 to 20 posts

Rule of thumb: the rate by impressions for judging posts, the median of those rates for knowing what is normal.

## What counts as an engagement on X

X's [Post activity dashboard](https://help.x.com/en/business-and-advertising#measurement-and-analytics) counts an engagement every time someone interacts with a post, and defines engagement rate as engagements divided by impressions.

X's engagements total

Bigger than the counts under a post. To match it, choose Use X's total.

Pick one set of engagement types and use it every time.

Compare a rate built from X's total with one built from public counts.

## Why your own median beats any industry benchmark

A benchmark describes other people's accounts. Your median describes a normal post of yours, measured the same way every time.

The ten example posts from the calculatorOne dot per post, by rate by impressions

**Median**

2.85%

A normal post

**Average**

2.57%

Pulled down by two weak posts

**Middle half**

2.42% to 3.17%

Ordinary ups and downs

**Beat the median**

5 of 10

Above 3.17% is a clear win

### Benchmark vs your median

Industry benchmark

Your median

Whose posts Accounts of every size and topic Only yours

Formula Varies, often unstated The one you chose

Clicks Sometimes counted, sometimes not Counted the same way every time

Platform Sometimes another network X

- Use the median, not the average: One post that spreads widely can lift the average for months. The median ignores it.
- Watch the middle half: It shows how much your posts normally vary, so you can tell a real win from noise.
- Refresh every month or two: Use your latest 20 to 30 posts. As your audience changes, so does normal.

## Common engagement rate mistakes

1. E1: ### Mixing formulas: Rates by followers and by impressions can differ several times over. Label which you used.
2. E2: ### Judging in the first hour: Numbers keep arriving for days. Compare posts at the same age.
3. E3: ### Trusting tiny samples: On 90 impressions, one extra like moves the rate by more than a point.
4. E4: ### Averaging percentages: A 9% account and a 1% account do not average to a useful 5%. Pool or use medians.
5. E5: ### Chasing a benchmark: Someone else's number ignores what your audience responds to.
6. E6: ### Counting yourself: Your own replies and clicks inflate small posts. Leave them out when you can.

## Engagement rate questions

### How do you calculate engagement rate on X?

Add up the engagements on a post, divide by its impressions and multiply by 100. That is the rate by impressions, which is how X's own post analytics describe engagement rate. Dividing by followers instead gives the rate by followers.

### Should I use impressions or followers?

Use impressions to judge how a post did with the people who saw it. Use followers only to compare accounts of different sizes when you lack impressions, and say which one you used.

### What is a good engagement rate on X?

One that beats your own median. Published averages mix accounts of every size and topic and measure in different ways. Work out the median of your last 20 to 30 posts and aim above it.

### Why is my engagement rate by followers above 100%?

The post reached many people who do not follow you, so engagements outnumbered followers. It is not an error, and it is one reason the rate by impressions is easier to read.

### Why does X show a different number from this calculator?

X's engagements total also counts clicks nobody else can see, such as clicks on the post, your name or media. Choose Use X's total in the calculator and enter that figure to match X exactly.

### Should I include bookmarks and profile visits?

Include them for a rate that reflects every way people acted, or leave them out to compare with figures built from public counts only. What matters is using the same set every time.

### Is anything I paste uploaded?

No. The calculator runs in your browser, with no sign up and no cost. Nothing you type or paste leaves your device.
