# Bold and italic text for X

X has no bold or italic button for standard posts, but Unicode letters that look bold, italic or script paste anywhere. Type, tap a style to copy it, and check what screen readers hear first.

## How to make bold text on X

1. ### Type your text: Type a word or short phrase; every style updates as you type.
2. ### Compare the styles: Each tile shows how many characters X will count for it.
3. ### Check what a screen reader hears: Try the same words in the screen reader panel before you copy.
4. ### Tap a tile to copy: If the clipboard is blocked, select the text in the tile and copy it.
5. ### Paste one word, not the whole post: Keep everything else plain so it stays readable and searchable.

## What a screen reader hears

Unicode bold is not bold text. It is a set of math symbols that look like letters, each with its own official name.

Some screen readers read those names, some read the letters, some skip them. Plan for the worst case.

### Try it with your own words

### Style a word, never a post

One word costs a listener seconds. A post can cost the whole message.

### Keep names and keywords plain

Your name, your product and anything people search for.

### Never style what people act on

Dates, prices, links, handles and instructions stay plain.

## Where bold and italic text works on X

Styled characters paste anywhere. Whether they should is another question. Rules from X's [username](https://help.x.com/en/managing-your-account/change-x-handle) and [profile](https://help.x.com/en/managing-your-account/how-to-customize-your-profile) help pages.

- Sparingly: ### A word in a post: Fine for one or two words of emphasis.
- Sparingly: ### Bio: One short label at most. Mind the 160 limit.
- Avoid: ### A whole post: Hard to read, slow to listen to, counted double.
- Avoid: ### Display name: Keep your real name plain and searchable.
- Avoid: ### Hashtags: A styled hashtag is a different tag.
- Avoid: ### @mentions: Handles allow only letters, numbers and _.
- Avoid: ### Links: Styled characters break the address.
- Avoid: ### Image descriptions: Alt text is for screen readers. Keep it plain.

## Bold text examples: good use and bad use

## Do bold letters count double on X?

Yes. X counts ordinary alphabets as 1 and [everything else as 2](https://docs.x.com/fundamentals/counting-characters). Math letters sit far outside the light ranges. Strikethrough and underline add a mark to every letter, which doubles the count too.

Gaps in some alphabets. A few letters existed before the math alphabets, like the italic h (the Planck constant), so they can look slightly different.

X's own formatting. Premium subscribers get real formatting, per [X Premium](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/x-premium). That is not the same as pasting look alike letters.

## Why Unicode bold letters exist

## Plain text first, in every post

Kairo Post counts styled letters the way X does, so a post that only looks short is stopped before it publishes. Images go out with their alt text. See the [publishing feature](https://kairopost.com/features/publishing) or more [tools for X](https://kairopost.com/tools).

## Bold and italic text questions

### How do I make bold or italic text on X?

Standard X posts are plain text with no bold button. This tool swaps your letters for Unicode characters that look bold or italic; copy them and paste them into X. X lists text formatting among its Premium features.

### Is Unicode bold text bad for accessibility?

It can be. Styled letters are different characters, and some screen readers announce them by name or skip them. Use them for a word or two at most, never for a whole post or your name.

### Do bold and italic characters count double on X?

Yes. Almost all styled letters sit outside the ranges X counts as 1, so each counts as 2. Strikethrough and underline add a combining mark to every letter, which also doubles the count.

### Can people find my post if I write keywords in bold Unicode?

Do not rely on it. Styled letters are different characters, so search, hashtags and mentions can treat them as something else. Keep keywords, hashtags and @handles plain.

### Can I use these styles in my X display name and bio?

They paste into both, but they use up the limits faster and are hard for screen readers. Keep your actual name in plain letters so people can read and search for it.

### Why do some letters look different or show as boxes?

A few styled letters come from another Unicode block, like the italic h, which is the Planck constant symbol. Devices without a font for a character show an empty box.

### Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion is a character lookup in your browser, with no sign up and no cost. Nothing is uploaded.
