Design rules for quote cards read on a phone

People see your card at phone width, not at the size you designed it. That one fact explains every rule below, and it is why the studio shrinks long text instead of letting it run small.

Worked example

Big on your monitor

Designed at 1600 px wide

× 0.225

Big on your monitor

Shown about 360 pt wide

48 px arrives near 11 pt, smaller than the post text

72 px arrives near 16 pt, comfortable to read

  • Contrast 4.5:1 or more

Low contrast vanishes first on a dim phone.

  • Main text size 4% of width

64 px on a 1600 px card stays readable.

  • Margins 8% each edge

Corners and grid gaps crop the edges.

  • Words per card About 20

Fewer words means each one is larger.

  • Line length Short lines

Break at natural phrases for easy tracking.

  • Typefaces Two at most

Let size and weight do the hierarchy.

Contrast uses the WCAG formula. The studio measures both ends of the background gradient and reports the weaker one.

Alt text for quote cards

Words baked into an image cannot be read aloud, searched or translated. The fix is the image description, up to 1,000 characters per image according to X's help page.

“

Write the post you would stop scrolling for.

Your Name

Screen reader hears

“Image.”

With alt text

“Quote card: Write the post you would stop scrolling for. Your Name, on writing for X.”

  • QuoteThe quote word for word, then who said it.
  • StatThe number and what it counts, as you would say it aloud.
  • ListEvery item, numbered, in order.
  • Before and afterBoth versions, each one labelled.

Skip colours and fonts unless they carry meaning. The studio drafts this text as you type.

Image sizes for quote cards on X

A single image between 2:1 and 3:4 shows in full, per X's help on posting pictures. All four studio sizes sit inside that range.

  • Landscape 16:9

    1600 × 900

    Default single image

  • Square 1:1

    1080 × 1080

    Multi image posts

  • Portrait 3:4

    1080 × 1440

    Lists, longer quotes

  • Wide 2:1

    1600 × 800

    Short headlines

These pixel sizes are this tool's choices, not numbers X requires. Any size in the same shape works.

When one card a week turns into one card a day

Kairo Post renders cards from your own templates in each account's saved style, drafts the alt text, and shows the credit price first. Cards come from templates, not an image model, so the words are exactly the ones you approved.

  1. Your template

    Saved per account

  2. Your text and alt text

    Drafted with the post

  3. You approve

Quote card questions

Something missing? Ask us

Do I need an account to make a quote card?
No. There is no sign up, no cost and no watermark. The card is drawn in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.
What size should a quote card for X be?
X shows a single image in full when it sits between 2:1 and 3:4. A 1600 by 900 landscape card is a safe default; a 1080 square suits multi image posts.
Why is my card text hard to read on a phone?
The text is too small once the image is scaled down, or the contrast is too low. Keep the main text large, contrast at 4.5:1 or more, and margins generous.
Should I export PNG or JPEG?
PNG. Cards are flat colour and sharp text, which PNG keeps crisp. JPEG is built for photos and smears the edges of letters.
Do I need alt text on a quote card?
Yes. Words in an image are invisible to screen readers unless you add them as an image description. X allows 1,000 characters per image, and the tool drafts it for you.
Can I use my own fonts?
The tool uses the four typefaces the page already loads, so the preview always matches the download. In Kairo Post, cards follow each account's saved style.
Can I put a real person's quote on a card?
Only if they actually said it and you credit them accurately. A card makes words look official, so check the source and wording first.
