How to preview your X post

Five steps, read top to bottom like a thread.

  1. 1

    Paste your draft

Replace the example; the counter weighs links as 23 and emoji as 2.

  2. 2

    Set name and handle

Type your display name and handle. Nothing is looked up or sent.

  3. 3

    Pick the account type

Choose the 280 limit, or longer posts if you have X Premium.

  4. 4

    Add images

Add up to four images from your device to see the grid for that count.

  5. 5

    Read every frame

Check phone light, phone dark and desktop: first lines, links and crops.

How X counts characters, and where posts get cut

A standard post holds 280 characters, but X weighs each character. Go over on a standard account and the post cannot be sent; the preview highlights what does not fit.

X Premium allows posts up to 25,000 characters. X does not document where the timeline shortens them, so the preview draws a line at 280: the part you can count on people reading.

Worked example: the sample draft

  • Plain text240
  • example.com/changelog23
  • Weighted total263

Add three emoji and a second link: +29, so at least 292. Over.

Make the opening line carry the post

People decide in a line or two whether to keep reading, and a phone line holds only a few dozen characters. The frames above show exactly where yours wrap.

  • Lead with the news, not the warm up
  • Put names and numbers early
  • Keep the first line able to stand alone

Stricter check: the hook grader.

Before

Hey everyone! It has been a busy few months here and we have been working really hard behind the scenes on something we think you are going to love. Today we are finally ready to share it: onboarding now takes one screen instead of five.

After

Onboarding now takes one screen instead of five.

We rebuilt it from scratch over the summer. Here is what changed, and why.

Each piece of the sample draft, and what it costs against the 280.

  • example.com/changelog23Links always cost 23. The preview drops https:// and shows a card placeholder where X may add one.
  • @yourteam9Typed mentions count like text. Auto mentions at the start of a reply do not count.
  • #buildinpublic14The # and every character after it. One hashtag reads better than three.
  • ↵1Line breaks count as a character, and the preview keeps them exactly.

X image grid crops by count

You can attach up to four photos. X publishes no cell shapes for two to four, so these layouts are a close approximation.

One image

Shown in full between 2:1 and 3:4. The only published rule.

Two images

Two tall cells. Wide photos lose their left and right edges.

Three images

One tall cell and two small ones. Put the key image first.

Four images

Four equal cells, each showing its middle. Match the styles.

Need the image at the right shape first? Use the X image size guide and cropper.

Why check light and dark mode side by side

Followers pick their own theme. Text survives both; images often do not.

  • A transparent logo vanishes against black
  • A white screenshot glows harshly in dark mode
  • A dark card with a thin border melts into a dark timeline

A checklist before you post on X

Run it with the preview open. Image descriptions: X's accessibility guide.

  • The first line makes sense on its own.
  • The point comes before the 280 mark.
  • Every link works and goes where you meant.
  • Mentions are spelled right and expected.
  • Images read at phone size, light and dark.
  • Nothing important sits at an image edge.
  • Each image has a description (1,000 characters max).
  • Numbers, names and dates match the source.

Preview, approve, publish, in one place

Kairo Post counts characters the way X does and previews every draft, threads included. Approved posts go out through the official X API at your chosen time, exactly once, with the credit price shown first.

X post preview questions

How do I preview an X post before posting?
Paste your draft into this tool. It shows the post on a phone in light and dark and in a desktop timeline, with your images, links and the 280 character mark.
How many characters can an X post have?
280 for a standard account, with links counting 23 and emoji counting 2. X Premium subscribers can write longer posts of up to 25,000 characters.
Where does X cut off a long post?
X does not publish the exact point. This preview marks 280 characters, because everything before it fits in a standard post. Put your point before that mark.
Do links count toward the character limit?
Yes. Every link counts as 23 characters however long the address is, because X wraps links in its own shortener.
Does the preview show exactly what X will show?
No. It is a close guide, not a copy. Fonts, spacing, link cards and crops vary by app and screen, which is why every frame is stamped Preview.
Are my images uploaded?
No. There is no sign up and no cost, and images are shown from your device with a local object URL. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why do my images look cropped in the preview?
With two to four images, each gets a smaller grid cell, so only part shows until someone opens it. A single image shows in full between 2:1 and 3:4.
